The terms get used interchangeably. They're not the same:

  • UI design is the visual and interaction layer, type, colour, layout, motion, the way an individual screen looks and behaves.
  • UX design is the flow and research layer , who the user is, what they're trying to do, where they get stuck, what they need to see at each step.
  • Product design wraps both, and adds the structural work specific to software products: IA, permissions, design systems, edge-case logic, and the coherence rules that hold a product together across platforms.

When to hire a UI/UX design agency.

Three moments where bringing in an outside agency pays for itself:

  • Post-PMF scope explosion. The product works. The roadmap has doubled. Your in-house designer (or designer-founder) can no longer hold the whole system in their head.

Patterns we encounter in the first audit conversation, across most product audits and redesign engagements:

  • State-blindness. The happy path is polished. Empty state is a blank page with no guidance. Loading state is a generic spinner. Error state is a stack trace. The 80% of UX work that decides whether a product feels solid is missing entirely.
  • Decoration over information. Beautiful cards with one number each. Lots of whitespace. Looks premium. Forces users to scroll past ten cards to see the data they need.

Tooling, handoff, and engineering collaboration.

The UI/UX work has to land in code. Our handoff practices are built around what engineering teams actually need:

  • Figma practices. Component-based files with proper variants (state �, intent �, size). Tokens wired through (colour, spacing, type, radius, motion). Auto-layout everywhere. No frame-based mockups.
  • Figma Dev Mode. Where the engineering team uses it, we structure files to make Dev Mode output meaningful, semantic layer names, token references visible, component props mapped clearly.
